Lighting the Unity Candle ...

The Unity Candle is being included in more and more ceremonies.

If you are considering using a Unity Candle in yours, here are a few thoughts to help you decide:

* The Unity Candle symbolizes the coming together of the couple from two separates to a whole. During the ceremony, the couple each takes a smaller lit candle and simultaneously lights a larger candle. The couple either leaves the smaller candles lit to symbolize that the couple retains their individuality or they can be blown out.

* Here's a variation on the Unity Candle. Each guest is given a small candle. The flame is then passed from guest to guest and finally passed on to the bride's and groom's candles. They then light the unity candle. This symbolizes that the support of all the friends and family is needed in the couple's new union.

P.S. Just a word of caution, if you're using a Unity Candle in your ceremony, put someone in charge of bringing the matches. I've seen a couple have to stop the ceremony to ask for a light. It was memorable -- for all the wrong reasons.
