The Big Send-Off ...

When the bride and the groom leave the reception, traditionally the guests send them off in a celebratory manner.

Throwing rice at the happy couple as they leave has been the most popular send-off dating back to the Middle Ages when guests would throw wheat as a symbol of fertility. But in recent years, rice has decreased in popularity because of potential harm it can cause birds.

So, if you do not want the guests throwing rice, planning an alternative send-off gives you an opportunity to be creative.

Tossing rose petals has been gaining popularity as a symbol of happiness and beauty. Grass and flower seeds are another popular option.

And, if you'd rather not have something "tossed" at you while you're wearing your formal attire, consider releasing butterflies or doves as you exit. Either option can add a festive element of nature to your wedding day.

A few cautions on your send-off: Keep in mind that weather may hamper your plans and check with your location vendor on their policy.

With all the fun and creative options available, it should be easy to decide how you would like to celebrate as you leave the reception.
